2nd Saturday Workshop: Monotype Printing

April 8 | 11 am - 3 pm

Join us at our next 2nd Saturday Workshop on April 8 to make beautiful one-of-a-kind monotype prints! Led by Del Ray Artisan Eileen O’Brien, workshop guests will use gel print plates, acrylic paint, stencils, and their own creativity to make monotype prints that can then be used to create unique handmade cards, gifts, or home décor.

Art Enables 2nd Saturday Workshops are free, family-friendly, and welcome all art-making abilities. Drop in anytime between 11 am and 3 pm to create your masterpiece. Registration is recommended, and we may close registration once we reach capacity.

Art Enables is committed to providing access to everyone. If you require accommodation during your visit, please make a note in the RSVP or email us at info@art-enables.org.

About the Instructor

Eileen O’Brien, an Alexandria, VA artist specializing in mosaics, acrylic painting and gel printing, likes to use patterns and repetitive images to form her primarily abstract art. O'Brien loves finding ways to reinterpret ideas and images and will hide bits of paper records or ticket stubs in her mixed media pieces. She has exhibited in several galleries in Virginia, Maryland and Chicago, IL, is a long-term member of Del Ray Artisans and is an artist-in-residence at Palette 22, an art-themed restaurant in the Shirlington neighborhood of Arlington, VA.

What is a monotype print on a gel plate?

A monotype print on a gel plate is a type of printmaking technique that involves using a flexible, reusable plate called a "gel plate" to create unique, one-of-a-kind prints.

To make a monotype print on a gel plate, you first apply a layer of ink or paint to the plate. Then, you can create patterns, textures, or other designs on the plate by using various mark-making tools, such as stencils, stamps, or even your fingers. Once you've created your design, you place a piece of paper on top of the plate and gently press down to transfer the ink or paint onto the paper. Each print you create will be different, since you can't make an exact duplicate of the design on the plate.

Art Enables 2nd Saturday Workshop series is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
