New Exhibitions Opening February 11, 2023
Opening Reception | February 11, 4-7 p.m.
We are excited to welcome three new exhibitions to Art Enables in February. Please join us for the opening reception on February 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. We'll have refreshments and wine and a chance to mingle with the artists.
“HOME TEAM: a staff-curated show” | January 14 – April 1, 2023
The artwork in "Home Team" was curated by those most intimately familiar with the studio practice of Art Enables resident artists: Art Enables staff. Tony Brunswick, Shreya Basu, Amy Kitchin, Toni Lane, Courtney Smith, and Aimee Wanner work with resident artists every day in the studio, bearing witness to each artist's unique talents, style, and creative development over time. The Art Enables team have a keen view into the inspirations, approach, experimentation, and dedicated work ethic behind work created here. This show pays homage to the passionate interest in the work of the Art Enables artists taken by everyone on the Art Enables "team," who also happen to be some of their very biggest fans.
“SPECTRAL DANCE PARTY!” | February 11 – April 1, 2023
You're invited to a very special - or should we say - spectral - dance party at Art Enables. With party lights to set the mood, watercolor paintings of dancers on sheer fabric hang in the air and “dance” in the breeze of a fan. Hip-hop, salsa, and disco dancers, prom couples, and dancing dogs and cats all float several feet above the ground, their visibility shifting as one moves around them. Party guests can view the dancers individually or see multiple layers of dancers at once through the gauzy forms. These dancers may be supernatural but the only thing that will haunt you...is their moves! This party is deejayed by the Art Enables artists, with a playlist of their favorite dance songs. With work by: Maurice Barnes, Duane Blacksheare-Staton, Marti Clark, Calvin “Sonny” Clarke, Josephine Finnell, Michael Haynes, Toni Lane, Helen Lewis, Paul Lewis, Raymond Lewis, CeeJ Maples, Vanessa Monroe, A.T., Gillian Patterson, and Imani Turner
“JUJYFRUITS” | February 11 – June 10, 2023
The works in “Jujyfruits” come together like the kind of candies the show’s title references: colorful, juicy pieces that have both individual appeal and amplified seduction when collected together. The playful drawings, paintings, and sculptures in this group exhibition share an interest in abstract and irregular shapes. In places, they seem plump, squishy, jello-like, and organic. In others, the artists offer harder-edged and jewel-like chunks. Simultaneously mysterious and joyful, the forms suggest familiar images without resolving into solid representation. Each work is a bold, animated presence inviting the viewer’s own associations and sensory responses. For this exhibition, we are pleased to present the work of our own Art Enables resident artists, as well as visiting artists from around the country. Participating artists: Amelia Briggs, Carolyn Case, Calvin “Sonny” Clarke (Art Enables), Andrew Geddes, Jennifer Little (ECF Art Centers), Marcus Orton (Imagine That!), Dennis Quillin (Art Enables), Matthew Russo, Eileen Schofield (Art Enables), Ruth Stafford (Creative Growth), A.T. (Art Enables)
