Art from the HeartArt from the Heart was founded in 1995 as an alternative-to-employment program focused on creativity and community inclusion for individuals who were moving out of the Fairview Training Center, the state institution for the disabled. Over the years Art from the Heart has grown and developed into an art school, studio, and gallery for adults with developmental disabilities to create, exhibit, and sell their art. Our mission is to foster each artist’s creative growth, build positive relationships within our community, and promote an awareness of the contributions of people of all abilities.

First Street Gallery Art CenterFirst Street Gallery/Art Center is founded on the proposition that human potential for creativity and artistic expression is not limited by physical or developmental disabilities. Short Center NorthShort Center North (SCN), developed in 1978, provides Sacramentans living in the northern part of the county, with an arts based day program for adults with developmental disabilities.
Short Center SouthShort Center South (SCS) was established in 1993 when the fast-growing Short Center was divided into two separate programs in order to provide more individualized services to approximately 60 clients each. A year later, SCS moved into a facility in the southern part of Sacramento making access easier for participants living in south Sacramento and outlying areas. SCS now serves upwards of 120 participants. SCS is firmly based in the arts, but offers options in education and recreation that promote personal growth and daily life skills. Studio art students participate in gallery shows and utilize varied mediums and techniques including watercolor painting, tile and mosaic murals, sculpture, traditional ceramics as well as collage, woodwork, and textiles. Additionally, the program offers photography, videography, film editing, and animation. Academic classes include reading, computer science, and internet training.
Spindleworks is a non profit art center for adults with disabilities and a program of the Independence Association of Brunswick Maine, whose mission is to help children and adults with disabilities achieve full and inclusive lives in their chosen community. Artists in the Spindleworks program come from surrounding communities including Bath, Topsham, Bowdoinham, Portland, Westbrook, Auburn, Lisbon Falls, Richmond, and Freeport.

Studio by the TracksStudio By The Tracks (SBTT), a non-profit organization, was formed in 1989 to provide free art classes to emotionally conflicted children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder or mental illness. SBTT maintains a focused, energized atmosphere that provides our students a haven in which to create. We encourage a supportive and nonjudgmental climate necessary to nurture creative abilities, enhance self-esteem, and explore alternative ways of coping with emotional and physical conflict.
Studio Downstairs is an all day open art studio and therapeutically informed community for people who have experienced emotional difficulties or are in a life-transition. They are dedicated to improving artistic expression, personal relationships, mental health, and community life.

Visionaries and Voices had its beginning about 10 years ago when two case managers for county boards of Developmental Disabilities Services came into contact with self-taught artists through their jobs. The trend of bringing the arts to historic Route 1 in Hyattsville seems to be coming to our side of Rhode Island Avenue. Our across-the-border neighbors in Maryland still have the more artsy atmosphere to it (for now) but we recently got a new art studio of our own.
